8 quotes for life

The world is a pretty screwed up place at the best of times, none more so now with all the shenanigans we read every day. I get up in the morning and think ‘What the hell is going to happen today?’ I’ve really got to detest that breaking news logo that pops up on social media as it seems to announce more proof that the world is dumbing down to great depths, plummeting at high speed.

It isn’t all bad though and we must not lose sight of that. I’ve collected various quotes through my life, which I treasure and think of often to focus the mind, remind me of certain values to hold.

Here are 8 of my favourites, although the list could be a lot longer.

If you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid. (Attributed to Einstein)
Life in general but particularly education, we standardise, benchmark across a wide area and that doesn’t bring out the best in the individual. Find what you are good at, work at it and enjoy it.

Any man who can drive safely while kissing a pretty girl is simply not giving the kiss the attention it deserves. Einstein
The message is simple – live in the present, the here and now. Give your full attention to what you are doing right now, do it well and enjoy the moment.Something I am not good at and trying hard to learn.

The difference between genius and stupidity is that genius has its limits. Dumas
Attributed to various people with most likely being Dumas. It bemoans the fact that people can commit acts of monumental stupidity which still surprise you, even though there are wonderous achievements every day by humans. Drive, walk down the street, interact with others in person or online and chances are you’ll see what I mean.
A constant theme.

It’s not that I’m so smart; it’s just that I stay with problems longer. Einstein
Another Einstein quote; I really like this guy’s thinking. When faced with a problem, it’s easy to give up when there is little success. Persevere and you’ll come out the other end. When working in IT, this quote lived with me on a daily basis

I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character. Martin Luther King, Jr
I see everyone as a person, with one measure – are you a person of worth? Or more crudely put, are you a twat or not? All other differences, which are only in place out of fear, ignorance or social engineering (read today’s version with immigrants) are intentionally divisive. See a human for exactly who they are, the content of their character.
Remember, hatred is taught and passed on, so teach kids to see past the differences.

You must be the change you wish to see in the world. Ghandi
Want change? Be the change, live the change and make the change. It’s the only way it happens.

Thig crioch air an t-saoghal ach mairidh ceol agus gaol.
The world will come to an end, but music and love will endure. Traditional Gaelic quote.
Lady Mackay & I tied the knot on the Isle of Skye. We toured the island and found Duntulm Castle, a ruin at the north of the island. There is a cairn there with this inscription and it has stayed with me ever since. It really is all that matters.

Laugh every day and try not to be a twat. Richard Mackay
Self evident this one. Just have fun every day, laugh and enjoy the company of others. It is good for mind, body and spirit. We’re all too serious, too quick to put our views forward instead of listening, talking, engaging and enjoying life. Have integrity, honesty and humility, be the best of human.

One last thing, live life for you. You don’t get another chance.
